In the past our teachers found that many parents, upon their child graduating from COLT, deferred the registration process to place their child in a primary school for Grade R. The main reasons being that the process is unnerving and has to be completed online. Also, many parents do not have a cell phone, or the necessary documents to upload. If it were not for COLT teachers assisting and guiding parents through the process many children would not be placed in a primary school timeously. Ten children are expected to graduate from COLT at the end of 2024.
This is why teacher Nushfeekah Levendal decided to meet with parents early this term to assist them. The teachers had to use their cell phone numbers to complete the applications online. Parents are made aware of future processes that are required for their child’s education, at the quarterly parent teacher meetings. They trust COLT staff and appreciate the time and effort that goes into assisting them, making sure that the transition to Big school is seamless for their children.
We work hand in hand with our parents forming a supportive partnership. Primary School principals are encouraged to contact COLT staff if there are any persistent issues with COLT graduates, especially absenteeism. Staff are in the communities every day while fetching the children and Social Auxiliary Worker, Nushfeekah does regular home visits so there is constant support and communication with COLT families and COLT alumni.
