‘It is in your hands.’

Nelson Mandela said: “It is in your hands to make our world a better one for all, especially the poor, vulnerable and marginalised.” The theme for Mandela Day 2023 – ‘It is in your hands.’

This month Class 6 learners from Michael Oak Waldorf School and their teacher Chloe Govender visited our Educare for Mandela Day. It truly was a heartwarming experience for our children. Class 6 spread their kindness just by being with our children, encouraging them, playing hopscotch with them, reading to them, and presenting each child with a crafted bracelet. It has had a memorable impact on COLT children and teachers. For some children, it was the beginning of a new friendship and the hope that there would be another visit soon. The mornings activities were also an opportunity for the Class 6 learners to express the child within themselves while engaging with our much younger children.

Socialising with children from different schools and backgrounds is so important for COLT children who don’t have many opportunities in the impoverished communities where they live. It gives their confidence a huge boost when they are able to forge relationships with older children through play and stories. Our wish for COLT children is for them to experience many more visits like this where they can develop new social and language skills, and on a higher level learn the valuable lesson of service to others.
